What is my password for O-Space?
As much as possible, your Xnumber and password are the same for
many Otis logins (library, databases, O-Space, DID, email).
I've lost my password? What do I do?
You must go in person to the Registration to retrieve it. A password
cannot be given over the phone, nor emailed.
The Xnumber and password you gave me is too difficult. Can I
change them?
Unfortunately, you must memorize your Xnumber. You can, however,
change your password through the CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD tab in My Otis.
Where can I go for help with software?
Academic Computing on the 4th floor have staff to assist students
with imaging software. Library and SRC staff will be happy to assist
with word processing and browser software. Library Staff will happily assist you with Library databases, the OPAC, O-Space, and DID.
I don't feel like I know enough about computers and the Internet.
Is there a way I can get up to speed?
Students: Library and SRC staff can provide drop-in assistance.
Plus, there are numerous online tutorials available through the InfoLit button on the left.
Faculty: The TLC will be very happy to assist you to learn anything you want in the
area of technology.
I want to use my existing email account instead of changing to
one issued by Otis?
That's not a problem. Simply login to Webmail and forward your email
to whatever email address you prefer.
I don't have a computer at home. What can I do?
There are 40+ iMacs available for students in the Library and an additional 14 in the SRC. Internet
Explorer and Microsoft Word are the main applications installed.
The 4th Floor has numerous labs with software for art and design work.
What about printing?
There is a high
volume printers in the Library, the SRC, and labs. Color printing is available in Computer Labs for a fee.
Why do I have to login to print?
There is an enormous amount of wasted paper here at Otis. We'd like to save a few trees. Printing is free, but you are required to login with your Xnumber and password so that you can track your usage. If you use more than your initial allotment of copies, you will be required to go to Academic Computing and request more.
Where can I make copies?
There are two copiers in the Library for student use, one of which is a color copier.
They reduce and enlarges. Copies range from $.10 each for black and white to $.50 for small color copies and $1 for large.
What is a proxy server?
A proxy server that sits between your web browser and the real server where the information you want is kept. The proxy server intercepts all requests and verifies that you are authorized to view the information you are requesting. This is where your Xnumber and password will be required. If you are authorized, the proxy server will let you get the information you want. The Library subscribes to 18 different databases which are available throughout the campus through IP address recognition. When you are off-campus, those databases will be available through the Proxy
Server.
How can I get access to Otis' wireless web connection?
The Otis campus is completely wired. If you wish to take advantage of wireless cab ability,
simply go to the 4th floor Academic Computing Department. They have a form you will fill out and they will provide a key and assistance. Coming Soon: Automatic sign-on with Xnumber and password.
I have to watch a DVD for class, but I don't have a TV at home?
Library videos and DVDs circulate, but if needed, there is a viewing area
with a monitor and VHS and DVD players. Most Library iMacs will play DVDs
and headphones are available to check out.
What is the DID?
In 2001, the DID (Digital Image Database) software was installed and in now in use
in several courses. The Library is currently building an art history
image bank, currently at 18,000 images, to support faculty instruction.
Students can access the lectures from classes by going to the Otis DID.
O-Space
Course support materials for many classes will be available through O-Space, the Otis Learning Management System which provides basic course websites with tools for online discussions, announcements, and downloading course content such as readings or assignments. The instructors let students know if they expect them to use O-Space.
